Killi introduces UBI through a weekly paycheck, compensating consumers for personal data

Hey Facebook, you need to take note of this! Yahoo! Finance reports how Killi, a “global leader in data and consumer privacy”, has launched the “Killi Paycheck”. What is it? “A new weekly payment that executes upon the concept of UBI by paying users directly in the form of cash for the use of their data.” Looks like a game-changing solution to us at GoodDollar. Universal basic income: a queer perspective

Why is it imperative that the LGBTQ+ community is involved in the design process and advocacy of UBI policy? Global Comment explains: “For the disproportionate number LGBTQ+ people living in [difficult] situations – victims of discrimination, abuse and poverty – a UBI would be a game-changer. Oftentimes, controlling and coercive behaviour involves financial abuse, leaving the victim unable to escape their abuser. A UBI that is wired directly to an individual (via their mobile phone or some other source that the victim is more likely to have control over) would provide them with this financial freedom.”

China’s Xi urges G20 to adopt ‘open and accommodating attitude’ on CBDCs

The virtual G20 meeting took place on November 21 and Xi Jinping made headlines for urging the group of world leaders to adopt an “open and accommodating attitude” on central bank digital currencies (CBDCs), according to The Block. “The G20 … needs to discuss developing the standards and principles for central bank digital currencies with an open and accommodating attitude, and properly handle all types of risks and challenges while pushing collectively for the development of the international monetary system,” Xi was quoted as saying. As The Block comments, his remarks are “notable, given that China is on the cusp of launching its own digital currency system, dubbed DC/EP. Testing is underway in Chinese jurisdictions and thousands of citizens have taken part in such trials to date.”

How UBI can expand educational and career opportunities

We need to take a holistic approach to UBI, argues Wendi Williams in The Hill. “It is important to note that UBI programs in themselves, even if they were to integrate digital and financial literacy components, should not be seen as the entire solution for addressing systemic inequality in educational and career opportunities,” she writes. “In order for these programs to truly achieve the larger goal of addressing systemic disparities in educational and economic opportunities — and to satisfy UBI critics who are skeptical of lasting benefits to the problems of poverty and inequality — they must be part of a broader, integrative strategy.”

Protesters march against economic, social policies in Colombian cities

Last week saw thousands of workers and students take to the streets in Colombia in protest at the social and economic policies of Ivan Duque, the South American country’s president. Diogenes Orjuela, leader of the Central Union of Workers (CUT), told Reuters: “This is a government that neither discusses nor negotiates, which means we need to maintain protests. The president is deaf, blind and mute in the face of other opinions.” Protesters’ demands include improving health coverage and education, establishing a basic income for the unemployed and those without pensions, as well as help for small businesses. Orjuela added: “As long as the government upholds its attitude of no dialogue or negotiation, protests will continue throughout the country.”
